The Carribean

We spent the weekend in Puerto Viejo, in the providence of Límon, on the Caribbean Coast. It was amazing, I spent a lot of time watching crabs, searching for shells, watching the waves come crashing in, and walking in the waves. We did find one beach that was not covered in reef and sea urchins so I was able to actually swim in the ocean, and it was amazing!

These little sea anemones were hard to find and even harder to photograph.

The view was breathtaking!

These coconuts were more than a little dangerous when they come crashing down.

We stayed at a hammocking hostel that was $8 a night. They even had some bathrooms and showers. The entire place was covered in mosaics. It was really neat! I think it is a common hang out for young people and hippies, but an adventurer can enjoy it too.

The rain gutter

I love to travel, but while I am traveling I often think of those that I leave behind. When I am standing by the ocean, I think of how much my dad would love it! When I am walking through beautiful flowers, I think of how much my mom would love them. Its strange how much I love to travel and yet how much I ache for what I leave behind, I wish that everyone could experience the things that I do, but I know that God has a unique journey for each person.

I think my favorite part besides the ocean, was sleeping in the hammock. On Saturday it rained almost all day so we spent a lot of time swinging. We also explored the surrounding area and everything had a Caribbean flavor. This is a very touristy spot so one could almost travel there without knowing any Spanish and get a long just fine. This was strange since we were so far into Costa Rica, but nearly every sign was in Spanish and English. There was a lot of diversity in the people and cultures there. Life is so different when you live close to the sea, and in an area where you literally sweat swinging in a hammock. I enjoyed my time there, but I do not think I am about to live in a place where showers are almost pointless.

I ended my time there with some shrimp and plantains.

I think the best part of the weekend, was all the time I had to simply relax. I spent a lot of time with God and surrounded by the ocean you cannot help but be reminded of Him constantly. I was in a place where drugs and drinks were offered freely and many people go to party, but Ecclesiastes 12:1 kept coming to me. Remember now they Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. This life is so short and only what is done for eternity shall last. It is wonderful to experience new things and explore new lands, but if they do not draw us closer to Christ they profit nothing. Unfortunately the slogans of our day do not work, its impossible not to live it up today and not pay the price tomorrow. Living for yourself never brings satisfaction, and your hunger will never be satisfied.

This morning when I was reading John 4:10-14 it just struck me, no matter how large the ocean is, it never satisfies. The ocean leaves you thirsty and dry. It is only in the Creator and the sustainer of the ocean that we can be satisfied. I am so thankful that God has filled me so that I do not thirst, and I am thankful that I have a hope within me that can be received by any who are willing.

John 4:10-14 states: Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
